SAMUEL FERSTL

born in 1991, resides and studies in Taipei City, Taiwan. He earned his Meisterschüler degree in 2021 under Andrea Büttner at Kunsthochschule Kassel. Prior to that, he completed his studies in Visual Art and Stage Design under the guidance of Thomas Grünfeld, Dr. Annette Storr, Dr. Ulaş Aktaş, and Lena Newton at Kunstakademie Duesseldorf from 2015 to 2020, with additional studies at Artschool Athens from 2014 to 2015, and sculpture studies at Kunstakademie München from 2011 to 2017.

Ferstl specializes in installation art and in situ work, strategically integrating paintings, prints, textiles, and sound pieces within scripts, improvisations, and auto-fictional tendencies that explore the context of the exhibition. He contextualizes his artistic mediums within narratives of cultural policy or the original intent behind their use.

His artwork and scholarship are influenced by critical examination of hegemonic norms, with a strong focus on exhibition histories. Currently pursuing an MA in Art History, Ferstl will graduate in 2024 from the MA Critical and Curatorial Studies program, with a thesis on Standpoint theory applied to documenta fifteen. He serves as the founding director of 埤益 PE Fine Art / Performance Epistemology, an art initiative and gallery established in 2021 in Cologne, operating across Munich, Düsseldorf, New York, and Taipei
